“Art in Birds” Tour at Green Island
May 19 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Join us for a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of art, conservation, and avian life on Green Island.
Monday, May 19th | 9:00-11:00am
This special tour, led by dedicated volunteer Kit Larsen and local artist Dennis Arendt, offers participants an intimate look into the Tree Swallow nesting initiatives that have flourished over the past decade.
For more than ten years, Kit Larsen, with the assistance of his friend Jim Ott, has meticulously built, monitored, and documented Tree Swallow nesting activities on Green Island. Their commitment has resulted in the annual maintenance of over 100 nesting boxes, providing essential habitat for these migratory birds.
In the spring of 2021, this project took on a vibrant new dimension when artists and bird enthusiasts Dennis Arendt and Shel Neal infused creativity into conservation by painting the bird boxes, celebrating the harmonious blend of art and nature.
During this 2 mile walking tour, participants will stroll along mostly level gravel roads and mowed paths, visiting these artistically adorned nesting boxes.
Along the way, you’ll hear firsthand accounts of the project’s evolution, learn about the significance of nesting boxes in supporting Tree Swallow populations, and gain insights into broader bird conservation efforts on Green Island.
Come and experience how community dedication and artistic expression converge to support and celebrate our local wildlife.
