Cascade Volunteers Chainsaw Certification Class

Two-day class for chainsaw training that may lead to initial A or B level Forest Service saw certification.

There is no fee.

These classes are intended for aspiring sawyers who are actively engaged as volunteers on the Willamette National Forest.   Those with a previous saw card that has expired should take this class if it has been more than 5 years since they last took the full saw class.  If a full saw class was taken in the last 5 years, a single-day field evaluation is acceptable for re-certification.
WHO CAN REGISTER?  The minimum age for chainsaw certification is 18.

A prerequisite for taking the class is to have an up to date First Aid and CPR card.

The cards must be obtained from a class that includes an in-person component (not fully on-line).  You can add your FA/CPR expiration dates to your BetterImpact profile.
A backcountry-focused First Aid/CPR class is available on-site at Fish Lake May 17.  You must sign yourself up through this link to Oregon Trails Coalition: FA CPR class registration May 17 This class is NOT given by Cascade Volunteers and does not appear on BetterImpact.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?  You must sign up separately for BOTH days of the saw event.   The class will be will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis, and a wait list will be started when the class is full.
WHEN IS THE CLASS?

Crosscut Saw Class: June 1-2, 2024

Each day requires attendance from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Saturday is mostly a didactic class ; Sunday is practice and evaluation in the field.

WHERE: Fish Lake Guard Station, near Clear Lake on Hwy 126. Participants may dry-camp on site, and provide their own food.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?  Students will receive a full packing list and additional information well before the class.   Students will need a gas-powered chainsaw in good running condition.   PPE is required:  hard hat, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, sturdy boots (over the ankle, lace up, lug or corked soles; no trail runners), chainsaw chaps, long pants and long sleeved shirt.  If you will need to borrow a chainsaw or chaps please contact the instructor well ahead of time.
