New ODF Wildfire Risk Maps Released

The updated wildland-urban interface and wildfire risk map (required by SB762) assigns every Oregon tax lot a wildfire risk classification of no risk, low risk, moderate risk, high risk, or extreme risk. Properties that are in the high or extreme risk classifications, inside the boundary of the wildland-urban interface, and have a dwelling, may be subject to future requirements to protect against the risk of wildfire through defensible space or home hardening building codes.

Properties that are both within the WUI and classified as high or extreme risk will receive written notification from Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). View a summary of each organization’s role related to the WUI and risk map.

Oregon’s Building Codes Division is currently working to update Oregon Residential Specialty Code (ORSC) Section R327 to:

  • apply to all new dwellings and the accessory structures of dwellings in extreme and high wildfire risk classes in the wildland-urban interface.
  • extend wildfire hazard mitigation building code standards to apply to existing dwellings that are replacing exterior elements of the structure.

Learn more about the process online.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office (OSFM) is also working to adopt statewide minimum defensible space code for homes or businesses in the wildland-urban interface and at high or extreme risk. Learn more and provide input on OSFM’s website.

Property owners are encouraged to review their homeowner’s report in Oregon Explorer. The individualized report will show what wildfire risk classification the property is in and other key information. If a property owner wants to appeal the wildfire risk classification, they can submit an appeal.
